We were excited by the challenge one of our medical equipment customers presented to us recently: design and build a custom machine for inserting a filament into a folded paper handle that is then simply pressed for closure. The product end use is for testing the pressure points on the foot for early signs of diabetes. With a keen eye toward the requirements of human machine interaction for this leap assembly machine, Mass Automation’s electrical and mechanical engineers quickly designed the wiring and completed the programming necessary. Our machining and metal fabrication skills were then employed to manufacture all the required components, such as Delrin thermoplastic idler rollers and nip rollers. We used a Hoffman enclosure with an electrical disconnect to house an A/B CompactLogix PLC, an A/B servo motor with a gear head, and a shredder. The paper handles were preprinted, prescored, and coated with pressure sensitive adhesive. The leap assembly machine, which also included a Keyence light curtain and a muting module, was assembled from anodized aluminum and aluminum extrusions as well as hardened steel pins. The custom machine then underwent factory acceptance testing to confirm full functionality. Mass Automation was able to design and fabricate this leap assembly machine according to customer specifications in only 16 to 18 weeks.
We knew from the beginning of this project that it was going to be used by individuals potentially dealing with a serious medical problem. Our care and concern for the end user is reflected in every aspect of the design, engineering, and fabrication of this custom medical equipment. Contact us and learn how we can bring this level of dedication and sensitivity to your medical equipment project.
